Having your Wallbreakers get killed before they blow up can often make the difference between a successful attack, and an unsuccessful one, so here are some helpful tips for using Wallbreakers.
1. Know how many Wallbreakers it takes to get through different level walls.
One level 3 Wallbreaker will take out a level 4 wall, but you'll need two for a level 5 wall, and 3 for level 6 or 7. At level 4, one Wallbreaker nearly destroys a level 5 wall, and 2 will take out level 6 or 7. The Supercell Wallbreaker page has a handy chart if you need more details.
2. Distract Defenses
If the defense starts shooting at your wallbreakers right away, there's a good chance most of them will die before exploding. In order to avoid this, the most common method is to send Giants first, though Barbarians can also do the job, and are less costly, particularly if you are worried about spring traps.
3. Timing is Everything
After dropping troops to distract the defenses, wait a couple seconds to deploy the Wallbreakers. If they are deployed too soon, they may catch and pass the other troops, causing the defense to target them more quickly.
4. Watch out for Splash Damage
Mortars are relatively easy to avoid since they only shoot once every few seconds. If you can't get out in front of the first mortar blast, wait until it has hit, and send your Wallbreakers immediately after. Wizard towers are a little trickier, and unless you happen to put a healing spell down in the target area, can easily kill your Wallbreakers before they explode. If you're trying to breach near a wizard tower, the best strategy is to put your Giants off to one side first, then deploy your Wallbreakers a couple spaces away to avoid the Wizards' splash damage.
5. Deploying all your wallbreakers at once can help you get deep into a base
Wallbreakers target the nearest fully or mostly protected building and blow up the nearest wall in the way. If that wall is removed by other Wallbreakers, however, the Wallbreakers adjust their target. This means they can often get deeper into a base if deployed all at once, rather than in groups of 2 or 3. The main drawback to this is that the deeper into the base you go, the more defenses the Wallbreakers will activate, so they may not get too far if they are ahead of your army.
6. It never hurts to have a couple extra
It's tough to waste any more army spots than you have to, but having a couple more wallbreakers than you think you need is usually a good idea.
This video is kind of long, but it covers everything you might need to know about Wallbreakers.
