General Attacking Tips

1. Take the Time to Scout, and Build Your Army for the Base You're Attacking

Usually you want to pick a base that works with an army you're comfortable with (hopefully you have more than one), and that you're fairly confident you can 3 star. You should be staying on your TH level (you need to ask if you want to drop down), though if you're an 8.5 you're okay attacking TH8s, and if you're a 9.5 you're generally going after TH9s. If there are no bases you can confidently 3 star, you should be looking to 2 star a higher base, allowing your other clanmates to go lower, where they'll more likely 3 star, and helping maximize overall stars for the clan.

2. Be Clear on Your Objective, and plan out each phase of your attack carefully.

If you're trying to 1 star, it's a completely different kind of attack than if you're trying to 2 star, and if you're trying to 2 star, it's also quite different than trying to 3 star.

3. TH8s and below are pretty much Always Trying to 3 Star

Unless you're attacking way above your level, of course.

4. At TH9, 3 star attacks generally have multiple phases, and usually require support troops

TH9s can and should still be trying to 3 star most of the time, but in order to do this, more complex attack strategies are required. Many higher level TH9s use strategies like GoHo and GoLavaLoon, which are multiphase attacks. Even GoWiPe and GoWiWi generally require hog or balloon support, or saving a small contingent of wizards and possibly other troops to target defenses on the side or back of the base mid way through the battle. If you're not doing these things, then you are basically just trying to power through the base, and are relying mostly on luck to pick up the third star.

5. Two Star Attacks Need to Plan for the TH and 50%

Don't just go for the TH and assume you're going to get 50% along the way. Especially if it's a higher level base, every percent is going to matter, so it's important to scout the base, find any buildings outside the range of defense, and bring archers or minions to take out those buildings before launching your main attack. It also helps to have a couple extra at the end to take out buildings you may have missed in areas where you've cleared the defense.

6. Every Percent Counts

Considering that total damage is used as a tiebreaker, it has become even more important to make sure you are bringing a small contingent of archers and/or minions to take out every building you can, particularly when doing smaller wars, where ties are more likely.

7. Ask for Help

If you don't know how to attack a particular base or are worried about some aspect of your attack, it can help to discuss it with your clanmates, who may bring things to your attention that you haven't thought of.

8. Don't Get All Crazy

War isn't really the time to use untested strategies, so if you're trying something new or different, it's a good idea to practice in multiplayer until you've got the fundamentals of the attack you're using down, and have worked out the kinks. Otherwise, you're probably better off sticking with attacks you're comfortable with.

9. Trust Yourself

We've all gotten nervous when facing a big attack that could decide the fate of a war, so if you're really prone to that, maybe it's a good idea to get your attacks out of the way early.

Another problem occurs when you're waiting for other players to attack at the end of a war before attacking yourself so you can go lower if they fail on the lower base. This can help maximize stars for the clan, but at a certain point, if your clanmates aren't attacking in a timely fashion, let the leaders know first, but you may want to go ahead and pick a base and attack it. If you've spent a long time carefully planning your attack on a particular base, it may make sense to go ahead and attack that base even if it's higher rather than trying to switch up your army and plan a different attack last minute.
